On Friday, the Tanners Association reported that it estimated that around 7.47 million animals were sacrificed in Pakistan this year during Eid-ul-Azha, marking a significant rise in animal sacrifice compared to last year.

The data revealed that the amount of sacrificed animals had increased significantly from the previous year in which approximately 6.98 million animals were sacrificed.

The number of cows and bulls sacrificed was a significant proportion of this year’s total at 2.75 million.

However, goats were still the primary animal sacrificed, with some 4.2 million goats being sacrificed across the country.

During the three-day religious festival, almost 500,000 sheep and 25,000 camels were sacrificed as well.

The association also shared information about the animal hides that were collected during the days of Eid and the estimated values of these hides.

The average price of a cow or bull hide was estimated at Rs2,200, whereas the goat hide was valued at Rs600 per piece based on the figures.

The price of a sheep hide was around Rs100 while that of a camel hide was estimated to be around Rs2000.

At these rates, the total proceeds of the collection of hides from all over Pakistan reached approximately Rs8.67 billion this year.

Eid-ul-Azha is one of the most important of the Muslim festivals, which reminds Muslims of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son when Allah commanded him to do so.

On this occasion, the sacrifice of animals takes place, and the meat is distributed to family, relatives, friends and the needy.

This year’s increases in sacrifices show that the tradition is still very relevant in the face of many challenges to many households due to economic factors.
