Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 to distribute malware, phishing sites, and fake pre-order scams before the game’s official launch, as revealed by new research from NordVPN.
The Threat Protection team at NordVPN found numerous harmful websites pretending to be Rockstar Games, gaming stores, and piracy sites, aiming to deceive users into downloading infected files or giving away their account information.
These scams often promote fake GTA 6 pre-orders, beta access, early downloads, or access to a supposed third trailer for the game.
Researchers noted that some harmful downloads were disguised as legitimate installers or graphics driver updates to avoid detection.
According to Marijus Briedis, CTO of NordVPN, the extraordinary excitement for GTA 6 has created perfect conditions for scammers.
Phishing sites target Rockstar Social Club credentials
The researchers also found phishing sites aimed at stealing Rockstar Social Club credentials and fake stores requesting payment for non-existent early access to the game.
Rockstar Games has not yet started official pre-orders for GTA 6, and the company has not announced any public beta tests or early access programs.
Security experts caution that any website claiming otherwise should be viewed with suspicion.
This warning comes as anticipation for GTA 6 continues to rise ahead of its scheduled launch in November 2026. Researchers predict that scam activities will increase as the release date gets closer.
