High alert has been announced in Jhang due to the high rise of the water level of Chenab River, which has created a fear of occurrence of river floods in low lying areas and along river banks.
Local and farm communities along the river’s edge have expressed their concern about increased riverbank erosion.
Residents say several acres of farmland have already been swept into the strong currents and that continued erosion might also lead to more losses to farm lands and nearby communities.
The district administration claimed that a flood surge in Chenab River is likely to reach Trimmu Headworks in the next 48 hours.

To guard against this, authorities have stepped up precautions in the risk zone and advised residents to stay vigilant and follow the orders issued by the authorities if things deteriorate further.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued flood alerts to several areas in Pakistan, saying that flash flood warnings are to be issued in rivers, streams, hill torrents and seasonal waterways due to the increasing rise in water level in these areas.
The water level is likely to rise in Jhelum, Neelum, Poonch and Kanshi rivers and Mehal, Betar and Bhimber streams, the NDMA stated.
The authority further has warned of potential flash flood on hill torrents at Dera Ghazi Khan and Potohar areas including Soan river.
The NDMA also warned of possible surge in water levels due to water releases from India’s Thein, Pong and Bhakra on the Ravi and Sutlej rivers that may aggravate flood conditions downstream.
Urban floods can also be a possibility in the town of Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Khushab, Sialkot, Gujrat, Lahore, Narowal, Okara, Chakwal and Attock.
The NDMA has asked all concerned Departments and local administration to be on alert and take preventive action in vulnerable areas so that speedy action can be undertaken to save lives and properties.
