England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler broke the record held by former Indian captain Rohit Sharma during the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Southampton. Buttler delivered an impressive batting performance, scoring 80 runs off 44 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.
With this innings, Buttler’s career tally in T20 Internationals reached 4,292 runs, surpassing Rohit Sharma’s 4,231 runs. Pakistan’s Babar Azam leads the list with 4,596 runs in 145 matches, while India’s Virat Kohli occupies fourth place with 4,188 runs.
Batting first, England posted 254 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 135 runs in 19 overs while chasing a target of 255. Jos Buttler’s impressive 80-run knock in the first T20I against Sri Lanka took his career tally to 4,292 runs in the format, surpassing Rohit Sharma’s 4,231 runs and making him the second-highest run-scorer in T20I cricket.
Rohit, who guided India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2024, retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, after featuring in 159 matches. Buttler, meanwhile, played his 161st T20I for England in Tuesday’s series opener.
