It is a yearly commemoration of the start of the Mexican war for independence from Spain in 1810.
September 16th is the official Independence Day of Mexico, when patriotic celebrations, public ceremonies, cultural events and festivities are observed throughout the country.
Almost all government offices, schools and businesses will be closed, and millions of people will celebrate by observing the day with family and friends.
The official date for Independence Day is September 16; however, the celebrations usually start on the evening of September 15.
The Grito de Dolores (The Cry of Dolores) is one of the best-known traditions and dates back to 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo gave the call for independence from Spain.
Typically, the festivities involve flying Mexican national flags throughout the cities and towns, and decorating public squares with green, white and red, the colours of Mexico’s national flag.
Music and cultural performances are also an important part of the celebrations, as are traditional food and even fireworks.
National Independence Day is celebrated in Mexico City by a large number of people going to the Zócalo to witness the ceremonial Independence Day, where the President is present.
It is also a time for Mexicans who live abroad to celebrate their national identity and culture. In several countries, communities hold particular events such as parades, concerts and traditional celebrations in Mexico.
In September, as the 16th draws near, the preparations for celebrating are supposed to also grow all over Mexico. Since it’s a national holiday, it gives people time to reflect on what Mexico was and how the fight finally brought it to independence.
Independence Day is a public holiday, but for many Mexicans much more. It will continue to be a strong reminder of the Nation’s history and ideals of freedom and unity.
