Heavy rain hit Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Monday and flooded many roads in the twin cities. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Satellite Town received the highest rainfall in Rawalpindi with 24 mm.
Shamsabad recorded 15 mm while Karore received 7.6 mm. Old Airport and Chaklala received 2.2 mm of rain, and Taxila recorded 1 mm.
Some parts of Islamabad received much heavier rain. Bhara Kahu recorded the highest rainfall with 75 mm.
NDMA warns of rivers levels
A day earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warned that water levels in Pakistan’s major rivers could rise between August 2 and 4 because of heavy monsoon rains. The authority also issued flood alerts for several areas.
The NDMA further advised people to avoid unnecessary travel to these places that are at risk of flooding until the weather gets better.
According to the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), the Lehri River at Head Gogi is facing high-level flooding. Medium-level flooding has also been reported in Nullah Palkhu at Wazirabad.
The authority said low-level flooding continues at Kalabagh, Chashma, Guddu and Sukkur along the Indus River.
Low-level flooding is also continuing at Head Nari on the Nari River. On the Chenab River, high water levels are expected at Marala, while low to medium water flows are likely at Khanki and Qadirabad.
The NDMA also said water levels are expected to increase in the Jhelum, Ravi and Kabul rivers, as well as their smaller streams.
Recent flood emergency in Rawalpindi and Islamabad
Just last week, many low-lying areas were flooded, and water levels in Nullah Lai and other streams increased after heavy rain. The district administration declared a rain emergency in the twin cities.
The administration placed WASA and other departments on high alert. Officials continued to monitor drainage channels and areas at risk of flooding.
According to the Flood Control Room, the average rainfall in the Nullah Lai basin was 54.51mm. The highest rainfall of 103mm was recorded at Kutchery Chaklala.
Shamsabad received 71mm, Saidpur Village 67mm, PMD H-8 63mm, Pirwadhai 60mm, New Katarian 58mm, Golra 51mm and Bokra 41mm.
The water level in Nullah Lai reached 10 feet at Katarian and 9 feet at Gawalmandi. A pre-alert was issued for Gawalmandi.
