Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho has said that any women who comes after her third C-section should be made to go undergo tubal ligation.
Addressing the fourth International Family Planning Summit held by Jinnah Sindh Medical University and the Gynaecology Department of Ward 9-B at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre on Friday, the Sindh Minister said that a woman dies every 45 minutes in Pakistan because of pregnancy-related complications. Better family planning and access to healthcare are essential to save mothers’ lives.
Health experts, researchers, policymakers and other professionals attended the event.
The theme of the summit was “Youth, Family Planning and Digital Innovation.”
The summit focused on new and effective ways to improve maternal and child health. It also discussed family planning and the challenges caused by rapid population growth.
She said the Sindh government was working to provide maternity services closer to people’s homes.
Old dispensaries are being converted into birthing stations. Community midwives are also being trained to provide safe delivery services at home.
She said the ambulance system was being improved. This would help transfer complicated and emergency maternity cases to hospitals on time.
Speaking about the Sindh government’s work, Dr Pechuho said the province was ahead of other parts of the country in several areas. She said Sindh had introduced many laws that did not exist elsewhere.
She said deaths linked to C-sections were increasing in Sindh. The government was working on the issue, and results would be seen soon.
She added that a woman coming after her third C-section should undergo tubal ligation.
The minister also said many women lacked transport facilities. Birthing station centres were therefore being established to improve access to maternity care.
