Meta has decided to end WhatsApp support for older Android operating systems, meaning users with certain outdated phones will no longer be able to use the messaging application.
According to a foreign news agency, WhatsApp support is being discontinued for phones running Android 5.0, 5.1 and earlier operating systems. Users of such devices may begin experiencing difficulties using WhatsApp from September 9, 2026.
WhatsApp regularly introduces new features, an improved interface, and privacy and security updates, which require more advanced operating systems.
Meta said the decision to end support is aimed at improving users’ security and privacy, maintaining the app’s performance and stability, and ensuring better support for modern features.
According to the report, users with older Android phones have been advised to check their device’s operating system version. If their device does not support the required version, they may need to switch to a newer phone to continue using WhatsApp.
Meta is also working on more advanced features, including those powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which require more modern hardware.
The report said WhatsApp support would be discontinued from September 8, 2026, for Android phones running operating systems older than Android 6.
This means millions of older Android phones could lose access to WhatsApp.
